THE ART OF
SPEAKING JAPANESE

One-Month Comprehensive Practical Course

🏆 How to sound like a native Japanese speaker
🏆 How to express emotions in Japanese

The course is suitable for everyone: beginners, intermediate, and advanced students, as well as Japanese language teachers.

You will study the unique tonal system of the Japanese language.

Every single Japanese word is pronounced with one of four tones: Heiban, Atamadaka, Nakadaka, or Odaka (this system is also known as "pitch accent"). Mixing up the tone of a word is roughly equivalent to misplacing the stress in an English word.

In the course, you will thoroughly explore how the Japanese tonal system works and practice it extensively. You will also learn which dictionaries to use to find word pronunciations.

You will practice the correct rhythm of the Japanese language.

The melody of the Japanese language is fundamentally different. We, as Japanese speakers, hear and pronounce words differently from speakers of Western languages.

In the course, you will practice special exercises to master the melody of the Japanese language. This will help you speak with a natural Japanese rhythm and better understand spoken Japanese.

A Japanese sentence has a distinctive intonation

The intonation of a Japanese sentence is different from English. Without the correct flow of intonation, your speech will sound robotic and unfamiliar to the Japanese ear.

In this course, you will master the intonational structure of Japanese sentences and refine your skills through thorough practice.

More Details About the Tones (pitch-accent)

There is a common belief that the Japanese language, unlike Chinese, does not have tones, but that is not true. Tones are actively used in Japanese as well, but they serve a different purpose, closer to stress in English: highlighting words in a sentence (this system is also called "pitch accent"). Incorrect use of tones sounds much like incorrect stress placement in English.

In total, there are four tones in the Japanese language: Heiban, Atamadaka, Nakadaka, and Odaka. Let's explore two of them:

Atamadaka

The word starts with a high tone and then drops down toward the end.

Nakadaka

The word starts with a low tone, then rises and falls again.

The earlier you start working on your pronunciation, the better!

Learning to speak correctly from the start is much easier than trying to relearn later.
The course is suitable for both advanced learners and complete beginners in Japanese.

Pronunciation Test

Below are audio recordings of sentences in Japanese. Each sentence is pronounced twice: once correctly and once incorrectly or in a way that sounds odd, potentially confusing your conversation partner.

If you can’t yet tell which version is correct, this course will definitely be useful for you!

私は日本が好きです。

I like Japan.

東京に行きたいです。

I want to go to Tokyo.

喉が渇いたので、お水を一杯ください。

I'm thirsty, please give me a glass of water.

 いつか会いましょう。

Let's meet up sometime.

Feedback from my students

Author and teacher of the course:
辻綾 Tsuji Aya

Teaching for me is an opportunity to show you Japan as I know and love it. Each lesson is not just about new words and rules, but also a chance to connect with Japanese culture and discover it.

Together, we will explore not only grammar and pronunciation, but also the cultural nuances behind every word. I love seeing how students rediscover Japan through films, music, art, and of course, traditions. When my students begin to understand how Japanese people think, how they express their thoughts and emotions, it brings me immense satisfaction.

Each step on this journey brings you closer to Japan, and I am happy to accompany you on this wonderful adventure.
